A Scientific Seminar Entitled “Smoking: A Threat to Health and Life” at the Kirkuk Medical Technical Institute
Under the patronage of the President of the Northern Technical University, Professor Dr. Alia Abbas Ali Al-Attar, and the supervision of the Dean of the Kirkuk Medical Technical Institute, Assistant Professor Dr. Lizan Medhat Mohammed, the Biological, Chemical, and Radiological Safety and Security Unit, in cooperation with the Community Health Technologies Department, held a scientific seminar entitled “Smoking: A Threat to Health and Life.”
The seminar was presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Laila Abdul Sattar Sadiq and Assistant Lecturer Ghassan Jalal.
The seminar addressed smoking as one of the most dangerous health behaviors threatening human life, outlining its various forms such as cigarettes, hookahs, e-cigarettes, and secondhand smoke.
It also highlighted its health risks, including cancer, heart disease, and respiratory illnesses, in addition to its impact on non-smokers, its addictive nature due to nicotine, and its economic consequences for individuals and society. Methods for quitting and the community’s role in raising awareness and reducing its prevalence were also discussed. The symposium aimed to raise health awareness, encourage healthy behaviors, and support community awareness efforts and legislation aimed at reducing smoking. It recommended the need to enhance awareness and work to reduce this phenomenon to protect the health of the individual and society.
