The Nursing Department was established in 1988. Prior to this date, it was one of the scientific departments in the Higher Institute of Health affiliated with the Ministry of Health. The department was formerly affiliated with the Kirkuk Technical Institute, then it joined the Medical Technical Institute/Kirkuk (part of the Northern Technical University). The first class of students graduated from the department in the academic years 1989-1990. Evening studies were also introduced in the department in the academic year 2015-2016.
